fire borderlines is a new journal imprint of creative justice press. creative justice press has as its mission to encourage and respond to people’s desire for authentic expression. we publish because we believe that social and cultural awareness generates and sustains social justice. we have grown out of five successful years of creating a physical space for poetry at Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative — an arts and culture non-profit. fire borderlines is seeking poetry, fiction, non fiction & art that, if the reader wanted to, they could touch, wear as a second skin against the world. we publish new & established writers, students, & faculty — anyone who creates art that is fearless — art that sparks.
fire borderlines is published three times a year in print & online.

who we are
We are a diverse group of educators, graphic and web designers historians, researchers, artists, musicians that specialize in connecting, and social infrastructure.
what we believe
We have as core values, the belief that everyone should have equal access to space, education, food, and other resources that create and maintain social justice. To that end, we value public scholarship and community creation.
graphite - my poetry workshop & writing site. The workshop is centered around the idea that when a community of poets comes together to read and write, what comes from the mouth and the pen produces more effective poetry. To facilitate this process, the workshop will ask you to stretch yourself through diverse writing prompts and diverse readings. Poetry is powerful and so are the people who write it. It is the job of the workshop to create a space where poets can express that power.

sassafras soul cuisine supper club
you tell us the place & we will set the table sassafras’ concept is simple- seed-to-fork scratch made soul fare paired with plant-based, grain-based, proteins that echo the deeply flavorful & imaginative textures, seasonings, histories & palates of cultures that have transcended geographic & culinary borders that are reflected in the African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-South American & African American traditions - all in a supper club style. the way we bring the food to you is as unique as we are. sassafras’ soul cuisine supper club will feed you where you are by bringing the plate to the place of your choosing. Do you have a cool space? House? Garage? Storefront? Yard? Parking lot? Or any other spot that you’d like to see filled with cool people, great food, great cocktails & great entertainment?
at sassafras you will find fresh, local ingredients used to make vegan, vegetarian & raw food a spectacular sensory experience that vegetarians, vegans, raw foodies & meat-eaters all crave.
eco-responsible & nutritious, sassafras’ executive chef’s vision is to grab food from Field (the onsite market next door) to fill the dishes from its organic produce in a way that is as symbiotic & creative as possible. Think fresh picks that both the chefs & the customers can choose by perusing farmers market style crisp displays that will allow sassafras’ chefs to use their house crafted authentic diasporic seasonings to prepare customized dishes in a truly chef’s table style for any seat in the restaurant.
sassafras soul cuisine will be an ambient 30-seat vegetarian, vegan & raw food eatery that as the name suggests, focuses on food that has never been only about the food it serves. And it can’t be. If the food is to be as transcendent & life saving as the people eating it, then it must be about what is essential because borders define limits, not limitations— so soul cuisine then is food that takes the essential ingredients that transcend borders to root themselves in the moqueca’s & gumbos, the injera’s & roti’s, the fufu’s & grits— into food as the map that connects us to the menus of our lives. What are the herbs that transcend? coriander – cilantro, cumin – curry, sassafras – file— What are the foods that transcend? broad beans – fava, callaloo – collards, calabaza – butternut squash, cowpeas – black-eyed peas. What are the foods that remain? Plantains, coconuts, red peppers, melons, tomatoes, ginger. What else remains when borders don’t define limits— when separation from place is not separation from essence? What is essential remains— essential ingredients that lead to transcendent flavors that curve in the belly of the gourd, the belly of the injera, the belly of the boat, the belly of curved fingers, the belly of the roti, the belly of the hand, the belly of the bowl, & finally the belly of each plate and bowl we serve at sassafras. This is what we bring to the table— This is soul cuisine. You tell us the place & we will set the table.
